Why is skinny in
Thank you. Not all pear shapes have wide hips. The body type is usually defined by storing more fat in the hips and legs though, creating a heavier bottom half. When they lose weight it can really depend! I am literally almost in tears right now. I have never found anything like this at all in my years of search for a plan to gain weight and feel great. I have struggled for years and years to gain weight.
I am so glad that I found this. Even though I am a struggling college student right now I will definitely be saving up my money to join this program and start to feel happy and healthy. I also love all the articles they are all very interesting and everything that I read I agree with.
Thank you so much for all the kind words. I can definitely relate to people thinking I was sick or anorexic, even though I was really trying my best to eat a lot, exercise and be healthy. I feel the same way here in Toronto, Canada. I can not tell you how excited I was to find this site!! I have been this way all my life and have hated it! I always thought something was wrong with me even though doctors have given me a clean bill of health everytime.
But now, I am feeling more confident and just want to build some muscle and tone my body more…and I never realized I have been doing it all wrong! I feel so much better about my body now and am so glad there are other people like me out there! Thank you for this amazing article!! Thanks for this!! Makes me want to keep going! Aghh I hate it when people assume the worst like that. Would I classify as an ectomorph? If I eat recklessly it goes to my stomach basically and the rest remains thin.
Your input would be fantastic. Most people are a combination of several. You should be able to preserve all of your muscle mass while doing that.
You should be able to build muscle fairly leanly. You zig-zag towards being lean and muscular, rather than trying to achieve both simultaneously. Your muscle cell insulin sensitivity improves, sending more calories towards muscle and fewer towards fat. This will all make it feel like you have far better genetics. This was an awesome article and really informative.
I have a few questions, if you have the time. That might make your lower body a little flatter. If you eat in a calorie surplus i. When someone first starts strength training they tend to build muscle even in a deficit, and that extra muscle will make you quite a lot stronger. Learning to activate the right fibres at the right times, learning how to use muscle groups together, how to lift things with proper leverages, etc. Thanks Shane! Hi, guys! Always a pleasure reading your articles!!!
I started a CrossFit training program a few weeks ago,and some of the girls that train there are just HUGE, they compete in the CF Games and all, ad they lift serious weight. So I was surprised to find CrossFit among the exercise programs that you would not recommend. Is there any reason for this? I would love to know your thoughts about this.
A lot of CrossFit athletes were professional athletes and weightlifters before CrossFit even existed. For example, Rich Froning was an all-star baseball player in high school and an excellent football player. He then got an athletic scholarship to college. After college he became a firefighter. Throughout this whole period he was presumably lifting weights.
At that point he turned to CrossFit and became a world champion competitor. CrossFit may have made them fitt er and strong er however. I think it has a great sense of community and friendly constructive competition.
Do these people do more than basic CrossFit? If you want to excel at a particular task, you generally need to train that specific task to a certain degree.
If you want to be the very best, that generally requires a combination of exception genetics and exceptional dedication.
Frank Zane almost certainly used steroids and devoted his life to building muscle. Rich Froning has ten more pounds of muscle. You see similar stats and lifestyles with female CrossFitters.
They have physiques that may not be achievable without drugs. Certainly that are unachievable without world class genetics. They also often train several times per day. I just figured, only another skinny female could understand me. For example, I can barely deadlift a barbell no plates. Hey Shea, so glad you liked the article! All of the issues in this article were ones that I struggled with personally as well. I think us skinny men and women perhaps have more in common than we realize, sometimes.
We begin with progressions that are easier to teach and safer for you to learn… yet still allow you to build muscle at a very rapid pace. You are SO awesome for this article. Finally, I have found a home on your blog!
OMG, I am sucking up all this information like my life depends on it because I am sick of my boyish body. Question for you Shane: I started incorporating some moderate junk foods the cornbread from Au bon pain for instance, is calories, lots of peanut butter mixed with coconut milk and bananas etc.
Is this a bad idea? My weight and figure have really started to depress me lately, with nasty comments being thrown around. This website was a godsend! I sleep all the time. I always hated that. Yeah, if you lift weights, you can absolutely build a bigger bum and stronger legs! Squats and Romanian deadlifts are amazing for that.
Gaining muscle goes hand in hand with increasing your BMI, too. If you can eat enough calories to gain a little bit of weight each week, and enough protein to build muscle, then your BMI will start inching up as you add muscle to your bum and legs. I was getting so frustrated not being able to find information for my body type.
By reading just one article, I already feel a sense of relief! I feel like a lightbulb finally went off in my brain!!! In college I weight lifted hated running and did martial arts. I ate tones of bacon hamburgers and fried chicken I worked at wendys and then I took protein shakes … I felt better in my body than i did growing up.
After college I used to work at a job where I lifted 5 gal paint buckets with ease another job were i lifted furniture ,I ate veggies bread and meat I felt great! After I had my baby I lost all the fat I carefully gained with breast feeding and muscle and I felt terribly depressed I ate and Ate but non of those glorious curves stayed.
I dont eat when im stressed and not working has stressed me out about money , food etc. I finally understand my body after reading this article.
As i sit here I am noticing my twitchy fingers hovering over the keyboard twitching. Now I can help them. I am an noodle and now am working towards my goal or stronger, not skinnier. In high school, I was a worry wort about being underweight. And gaining weight was a challenge. Just the other day, A girl at drill basically called me anorexic! I love food. I love trying new foods and cooking anything Asian-related! Plus the food is always gross anyway! National Guard gets terrible pay.
This girl calling me anorexic made me mad, but reading this though made me feel happy again. I hardly have trouble maintaining a healthy weight and gaining muscle mass, but sometimes I get a bit antsy and check it anyway. I love seeing the before and after pictures.
I wish there were girls I could relate to. My goal weight is pounds. I thought when I got pregnant, I would gain weight, but to no avail. Hi, this article was great!!
I really loved it, especially because it seemed that finally, somebody understands me! You mentioned that we want to gain muscle. So I was wondering if there is any way to gain fat, let it stay in the breasts part, and make it into muscles in other areas and in breasts too?
Your hormones and genetics will influence where you store fat, but gaining fat is fairly straightforward. Not necessarily easy, but straightforward at least. This was a great read. The problem is now, I need to stop being picky with my food and motivate myself with weight training, which is a little hard. No need to switch over to entirely eating salad or anything.
And with the training, start small! So, if I start weight training will I simultaneously lose the little layer of fat that I have while also building muscle?
Would this program be suited to my body type? Oh no! Building muscle while losing fat is not common, as muscle is best built in a calorie surplus and fat is best lost in a calorie deficit. Numerous studies have shown that people who are new to lifting weights properly will often simultaneously lose fat while building muscle if their diet is also on point.
The other exceptions are obese people who are lifting weights while dieting, and bodybuilders taking steroids. Your diet would need to be pretty good. Your weightlifting program would also need to be quite good.
Hi I love this article brilliant insight in to how your body works. I am currently 8st 5pounds and naturally toned already. What do you recommend for me I will do anything if it will definitely work but I want to gain it relatively fast not in a week obviously but I want to gain at least 10pounds in the next few weeks, is that realistic?
So you want to gain fat, yes? People can gain fat fairly quickly, yeah. How much you eat will determine how quickly you gain the fat. You can minimize the muscle gained by not eating a lot of protein. Hi, thank you for your prompt reply. Do you know how much realistically some body can put on before it shows?
I just want to be a fuller woman but im not sure what to do to get a fuller figure all round. Yeah, consistency is a big part of it. You could start keeping track not just of your daily calories and a rough estimate will do but also your weekly calories. Five pounds will sometimes show on smaller women, depending on where the weight is.
Ten pounds will usually be quite remarkable. If you want to gain fat you may find that dessert helps too. Personally this was hugely informative and makes my life body so much more understandable and I believe it will help in my own endeavors for gaining weight mainly muscle.
Hey Michael. Thanks for the kind words, man! Glad you dug it. Have you seen our Bony to Beastly site for skinny dudes? What do you mean about having too little body fat as you gain weight? Thank you so much for this wonderful article! My ideal weight is lbs though and I think your method will really help me. I think I eat well enough, I love fruits and vegetables especially. I really appreciate you writing this article. Love from the Caribbean island of Grenada :.
Our pleasure, Lisa! Really glad you liked it. And congrats on gaining those 6 pounds!! I agree. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You clarified everything for me. Definitely going to sign up! Motivation is key! Really glad the article helped, Makida! You sound like exactly who we wrote it for, and exactly who the program is designed for. I hope you do decide to sign up!
What would you recommend? I know exactly how you feel. I know how frustrating that is. What would I recommend? If you do a good job of this, the weightlifting will cause your body to invest in building new muscle, and the calories and protein will allow for that growth.
Wonderful Article! So not much related to body composition or strength, but rather blood vessel development, oxygen delivery, muscular endurance, etc.
Bony to Bombshell is more about strength, muscle growth and fat loss while maintaining muscle mass, if you so choose. This is amazing!!!! I have been looking for information like this for such a long, long time. I have always been a skinny gal and struggled with it forever but this year has been especially frustrating. I gave birth to my daughter in June and after gaining 60 pounds during pregnancy and never looking better honestly , I did what EVERYONE told me to do and started moving and exercising postpartum to get my body back.
Between light exercise and breastfeeding I have dipped below what I was prepregnancy! Its so frustrating that the only information I have been able to find is just to eat more. Which of course I have been really putting an effort into.
I have thought about stopping breastfeeding but my goal was to make it to a year and my daughter is so healthy it feels wrong to stop just for my own vanity. Nobody has any sympathy for a woman who has lost all her pregnancy weight and then some but I look and feel terrible.
Just skinny and bony and worn out. So interesting! Thank you so much for all the work and time you have put into these articles. However there are ways to make this easier. All the research continues to demonstrate just how much better breast milk is for your LO over formula. Getting in those extra calories should also help with feeling better. PS we do have a payment plan option to help spread out the cost over 4 months.
Give us a shout at us bonytobombshell. But the thing is, I eat really well. My mom is former nurse and has studied health and nutrition for years, I take a lot of supplements, eat organic foods, but I still splurge like any average American does. Are you at a healthy weight?
That depends! Eating nutritious foods is very important, as is being active, but the most important thing is eating the right amount of food. Someone on the verge of starving to death because they only eat salad is in far worse shape than someone maintaining a healthy weight on McDonalds, you know? However you are right, different people will have very different healthy weights. Your ideal, healthy weight might be far lower than most other people if your bones weigh substantially less.
You also need enough protein, calcium, vitamin D and heavy lifting to keep your bone structure strong. Another approach would be to take your genetics to their extreme and become a fantastic decathlete or marathon runner or whatnot, although that may not be as healthy. I think your BMI will always be on the low side.
Thank you for caring to put so much time and effort into sharing your knowledge. This was so helpful to me. I never really cared to weigh myself at my best. I just get full quicker than most people I know now I know why, thanks! So along with my exercise went my appetite. After reading your article I really feel like I have the information I need to be able to manage my appetite and gain more weight.
So glad we could help, Kaity! Good luck! Guys, can you help me? In the past I tried to bulk and the result was even more cellullite, even a bigger butt, even more fat in the hips and a bloated face. Thank you! Just make sure to follow a good, heavy lifting program and eat plenty of protein around a gram of protein per pound bodyweight as emphasize muscle retention and growth!
Reading this website has been a breath of fresh air! I am seriously looking into this program, but as a student my budget is limited, but I know where to start now. Any other students reading this can send us an email at: us bonytobombshell.
Finally something!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article. I appreciate your effort. My parents were quite the same when they were of my age. Yes, your genes may not be helping you build muscle. To get a stronger and more muscular physique though you may find that you need to approach it very deliberately, following a dedicated muscle-building program in the gym and eating a muscle-building diet.
Finally a great article for naturally skinny people! I have no cravings for junk or sweets. Just a super metabolism! My highest weight was lbs and to be at that weight, I was doing Tae kwon do 3x a week and playing ultimate Frisbee which opened my appetite and made me eat a lot more… I was also drinking more beer back then.
So I agree with the article. When I train muscle mass , I gain weight and appetite. My only problem is when I stop training. I lose the weight so easily. I also tried to do the calories counting thing but had a hard time forcing myself to meet the numbers and I get so hooked on trying to gain. If you eat super quickly you can definitely get ahead of your appetite and accidentally eat too much, although in your case that might be a welcome effect!
And thank you for sharing! My collar bones are overly visible and my parents keep complaining. My stomach size must be small because I get so filled easily. Are there any foods I should eat more to gain healthy weight fast? I look forward to your reply, and thank you for this site! Lots of good ways to eat more food. Snacking e. Hi my name is Brittany.
And when I do gain a little weight it comes right back off. Thanks for this article it was also really helpful. Please, please help me! What do you think of this article? I was able to find the cited studies online just google the univ. Hey Goran, sorry about your comment not posting right away. The only confusion is that you think we disagree. The science is very clear that using both higher and lower reps is ideal for growth, so the Bony to Bombshell program uses a strategic blend of higher and lower reps.
We do talk about endurance work being atrocious for building muscle, and it is. In that article, Jim Stoppani is talking about higher rep bodybuilding stuff. Like Stoppani says, the best results are achieved when you use both.
Yes it does! The truth is, the lifestyle practices tied to averse health outcomes — lack of exercise, poor diet, stress — aren't always exclusive to being overweight. No matter your BMI, eating a balanced diet , moving your body , and building muscle can help manage body fat percentage as well as help you live a longer, healthier life. The below statements are trademarks of being skinny fat or having normal weight obesity, according to Klein. And, TBH, all of these are indications you might be able to improve your overall health by making lifestyle tweaks, regardless of your body fat percentage.
If you identify with a few or all of them, it's a good idea to check in with your doctor. Being mindful of your everyday habits — what you eat, how often you exercise, how much sleep you're getting, how much water you're drinking, etc. Save FB Tweet More. You lack muscle. You experience constant "sugar crashes" or "brain fog," such as fatigue, low energy, or difficulty with your focus, memory, or concentration.
You don't consume much protein. Your belly is bigger than the rest of your body. Your diet regularly consists of excess carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners, sugar, or processed foods. You feel light-headed after mild exercise. Heads up, here are some other reasons that might be happening. I do avoid dairy and chocolate because both make me break out and try not to eat too much sodium because it makes my face puffy, so worrying about my skin keeps me thin too.
I am always flabbergasted by friends who are overweight, see me eat a bagel here or there and assume that my metabolism is so much higher. These are the same friends who always seem to be eating desserts or snacking and as you said, generally obsessing over what they eat. If you think of food as fuel and are distracted by other fun things in your life, not every meal has to be delicious and unique.
This is very interesting. I have compared notes with a friend of mine who was naturally skinny until he got sick and had to go on steroids long-term. I have been overweight my whole life, so now we are both trying to lose weight and are weight loss buddies. He usually only ate until he was just starting to get full, often about half the food on his plate, and he snacked mostly on fruits and vegetables, and sweets.
He ate a fair number of sweets for snacks, but never really ate things like chips and popcorn, with the exception of nachos once in the while. He never drank diet soda, and drank lots of sugary tea. He also used to be active, but now he has no energy to exercise because of his condition.
Now he never feels full steroid side effect and his eating has been thrown off because he can eat constantly and not feel full. He says he thinks about eating a lot now, when he never did before, and he eats every bite of what he orders when he goes out. As for me, I have always had a huge food obsession, for as long as I can remember.
I was put on my first diet by my pediatrician at age five. Food is on my mind from the time I wake up, until the time I go to sleep. I make lists of meals I want to eat and restaurants I want to try. Nothing ever fills me up.
I try to diet and eat healthy, but nothing satisfies my appetite. Today already, I have had a protein shake, two servings of vegetable soup, a cucumber, a bell pepper, some carrot sticks, and some popcorn. I have to eat 4 meals a day and 3, calories total measured on a spreadsheet.
In fact I had flu in January and lost 25lbs in two weeks. Taken me one month to recover 8lbs back at least. Just burn calories very fast. Not good. Thanks for sharing. There are always unique cases, and as frustrating as yours is, I think most of us would rather have that problem than the opposite. I am recently losing weight on a low-calorie diet.
I have gone from lbs, to currently lbs, working on becoming lbs. I hit lbs down. With that said…. I think we both came to a conclusion, that WE both maybe not everyone, though agree on. It is very very possible that during your lunch hangout with that friend, they splurged a bit and got the burger! I would gain the weight, they never did! I hated them! They always got the greasy junk delicious food!
And I always felt guilty to have it too, because I was starting to get chubby. So I just wanted to add my 2 cents here. So well said, Stephanie! Thank you for sharing your story. God bless! I also disagree. That said, I can make observations based on where I was thin then…get it? Thinking as a empowered person rather than a thin person helps with being attractive and moving forward in life.
This is a really great post! Just the sort of info and spirit I needed and I think a lot of women will appreciate. After having my daughter, that is probablu more like lbs. I have many family members in the same boat. I do eat more than most people as I have actively tried to gain weight very often. I have done calorie diets with no change. The only difference between myself and someone trying to loose weight is probably our weight goals.
It is as hard to gain weight for a thin person as it is to lose weight for a heavier person. I have recently discovered macro counting though and it has helped me. My diet was so high in fats and protein that it had revved up my metabolism.
Adding more carbs and restricting fats is helping me gain weight. I never would have imagined that all the cheese I was piling on my pasta was keeping me from gaining weight. I find this article very interesting and so true. My whole life I have been naturally thin and have never really thought about what I ate — not to say I ate unhealthy all the time but just ate when I was hungry. I ran track and cross country in high school and college so was very active.
I was never obsessed with my diet. To say the least I found it very rude that people could comment on my weight and what I ate bc I was thin! I will say I have never had to deal with a weight problem so I have no idea how hard that might be. I have had 2 babies and gained about 40 lbs with each pregnancy and never had an issue losing it — which again everyone wanted to talk about. Nothing that grand or a trendy diet. Lastly- I honestly hate how so many people openly comment on thin people!
I appreciate your story! And yes, I agree with your note at the end. We should all be more sensitive. Much aloha to you and thank you again for taking the time to comment! I enjoy walking everywhere and I walk anywhere from miles a day just working and doing my daily errands. I am in my late twenties and I eat anywhere from calories a day. Im actually teaching myself to sew because clothes have become such an issue. Walking that much would also play a role, but in general you do not fit the norm.
I think the post you read is for the great majority of women but obviously not everyone. I have been tested for all thyroid issues and I have none. I eat constant small meals. Which is most likely part of the reason why my metabolism is so fast. I would also like to add that clothes do not fit me because I am very petite but also because sizing regulations do not exist anymore.
Not to mention that the size of clothes has almost tripled since the 50s. She had a 24 inch waist. You eat enough to fuel your body without gaining weight. Meal frequency has nothing to do with Thermodynamics, fact is you could eat one meal a day and gain or lose weight based on how much you eat. Simple physics. Sooooo true!!! Thank you for commenting, Raphael!
I hope you can get my book and find more support there. I believe you can be back to your previous weight… Though only eating once a day sounds hard to me, you find what works for you!
This is so wrong. Thanks for reading and commenting anyways! Case in point my friend did something I have never seen her do when she got pregnant. She gained weight! I love that you observed her and figured all of that out. Very good. This describes me perfectly. I kept losing weight! Then after I delivered my first child I was in grad school, breastfeeding, and had gained 20 extra pounds from pregnancy so reverted back to my old thinking and obsessing about food.
Hoping to get back to my previous ways of thinking thin! Loved your post. Thank you Mallarie! This is so interesting, I am so happy you shared. Great example of the difference our mindset makes! I am confident you will get back to the old way of thinking.
A few months back I started dating a food obsessed person who always ate every meal, so I started just eating those meals with him. I gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks! What an interesting story! I am so glad you took the time to share! Love hearing that and find it super interesting. Other people may lose weight as a result of certain medications or an underlying medical condition.
Sudden weight loss without trying can also be an indication of a health problem, so talk to your doctor. For some people, being too thin is a self-induced condition, known as anorexia nervosa. Anorexia is a condition where sufferers may diet to the point of near-starvation or exercise excessively all in the name of weight control.
Though anorexia is a psychological illness, it can have serious physical complications, including heart and lung problems, osteoporosis, and, in some cases, death. Many people with anorexia do not see their weight as a problem and may go to lengths to hide their habits. If you believe someone you know is suffering from anorexia, encourage them to seek help for their condition.
