Why is microphone currently unavailable

Please run a Test on the Microphone from the F2 Diagnostic - Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer. If the Test pass, please perform a System Restore to an earlier time before the issue started - Shut down the computer completely.

When i go into recording devices the mic is shown but it says it is 'currently unavailable'. But in playback devices it is showing my headset it working. Sound plays fine through them and i can her the mic on through the headset and it works on my xbox, so it is on.
