During the party scene, Tybalt spotted Romeo and identified him as a Montague. During that night no actions are taken but Tybalt is still mad, so he decides to fight Romeo on the streets of Verona. At first Romeo refuses to fight since Tybalt is his cousin because he is married to Juliet. Instead Mercutio takes his place in the fight. His hastiness leads him to make decisions that are not intelligent or to his benefit. Yet the morning before, Romeo was suffering from depression because he could never have his Rosaline. Instead of staying with Juliet when the watchmen came, and because of his cowardly and irresponsible choice, Juliet ended up dying.

Friar Laurence made many poor and irresponsible choices throughout the play, and these choices ended up being fatal for Romeo and Juliet. By making these decisions, he is the single person that was most responsible for the tragic outcome of the play.

Another mess up he had was not having a backup plan. His plan was to give Juliet a potion that made her seem dead so that she would not have to marry Paris. A messenger was suppose to bring a message to Romeo telling him Juliet is not actually dead and that he needed to go to the tomb. When he got there he was suppose to wait till she woke up and then they would run away together with their parents thinking that they are dead. This master plan failed drastically, it lead to the deaths of Romeo, Paris, and Juliet.

This tells us that the failure of the letter not reaching Romeo is a mistake as people are anxious about the infection, which they may catch. In the play Friar John has a very small role, but nevertheless must take a part of the blame.
