Why does paranormal activity have 2 endings

They escape the pit, but the demon escapes and begins to hunt them. The demon kills Dale and goes after the remaining two visitors. Then in haste, Margot and Chris trudge back through the snow to get their car keys, which were on the dead body of Dale and head to a garage. On their way, they see the members of the family seem to be all possessed and crazed and harming one another.

As they drive away, they attack them from all sides of the vehicle as they make their escape. Margot lets out a horrifying scream as they appear to drive away. Later that night, the perspective is changed to a pair of police officers' cams who reach the now empty farm.

They are both somehow forced to kill and shoot themselves as one of the members of the farm Samuel stands in front of them, also possessed. Samuel gets into the police car and drives off before the credits roll.

Police showed up later and found Micah's body and Katie in a catatonic state. Their appearance caused Katie to break out of her trance and engage in an intense conversation with police, knife still in hand.

A door slamming shut added to Katie's erratic behavior, prompted police to take immediate action and fatally shoot her before proceeding to investigate the house. They found the camera still running, and the film ended. While this would - presumably - keep Katie from returning in the franchise, it would add definitive closure to the movie, and perhaps that was what the issue was in general. Horror franchises like these tend to rely heavily on a cliffhanger or open ending to set the pace for sequels in the future.

Paranormal Activity could have continued without this, but would have had to close the door on Micah and Katie's story - likely for good. After the film was picked up by Paramount Pictures, Steven Spielberg decided that he didn't like Peli's original ending and offered up a different ending instead. Twenty minutes later, we hear the police knock and enter, warning anyone in the house to "make themselves known" because they have their weapons drawn. As they search the first floor, it appears as if the demon has left Katie's body: we see the light to the attic turn on, then off, as if the demon went back into hiding.

The police come upstairs, find Katie and warn her to drop the weapon. She's dazed, running toward them yelling, "Where's Micah!? Where's Micah?! The door to the attic slams shut, startling the police so much that one accidentally shoots Katie dead. The final sixty seconds of the film shows the confused policemen, asking "Where did that [noise] come from?
